Proton Energy Systems Proton Energy Scholarship Program
Welcome

Q: Will I still be eligible for the scholarship if I decide to delay starting college for a year or if I take off a year for non-academic activities during the time I am enrolled in school?

A: No. The scholarship is intended for students who plan to attend four consecutive years of college starting the year the scholarship is awarded. To be eligible to receive scholarship funds in future years, as stated in the Rules and Guidelines, the student must have met the minimum academic requirements during the previous academic year. If there is no academic record, the scholarship becomes void from failure to meet the requirements for eligibility.

Q: Can you guarantee confidentiality for submitted letters of recommendation? That is, the student should never be able to see any letters regardless of whether or not they win a scholarship.

A: Yes, confidentiality is guaranteed.

Q: Would you prefer I submit my application and other materials all at once, or separately?

A: It's completely up to you. We keep a folder for each applicant, and track which materials we've received, and which are outstanding. Please note that ALL materials must be postmarked no later than Februrary 10, 2010.

Q: On the application, under Your qualifications, you ask "why are you a good candidate to recieve the award?" Additionally, there is a required essay question: "Why should we award this scholarship to you?"

Should we include the same answer in both sections?

A: Good question: these two parts of the application are very similar.
  • On the application, under Your qualifications, please respond in about 1-3 sentences.

  • For the essay, we're expecting 500 to 1,000 words.
It's up to you whether each response will contain some of the same information.

Q: I was wondering if I could submit more than 2 essays. Would I be disqualified or given extra points?

A: You are welcome to submit more than two essays. If you do, the fact that you submitted more than what's required is unlikely to help you gain favor with the review panel (you will not be given extra points); however, if you think the additional essay(s) will allow the reviewers to get a better sense of who you are and why you're qualified for the scholarship, you're welcome to submit it. Your choice.

Q: If I mail everything in the same envelope how will I know when/if all my information has been received?

A: Many parts of the application can be sent electronically or emailed directly to the Hydrogen Education Foundation for immediate delivery.

For parts that need to be mailed or if you're concerned that your application won't arrive on time, please simply mail it early to allow enough time for the postal service to deliver it. You can also mail it as certified mail, which gives you options for tracking delivery.

In any case, you can always email us for confirmation after the piece should have arrived. Please use this address: info@protonenergyscholarship.org

Q: How many scholarships will be awarded this year? A: We intend to award one 4-year scholarship (worth up to $100,000 for 4 years) and at least one Honorable Mention scholarship (worth $500 for one year) although it is possible that more awards may be made based on the quality of the applicants.

Q: Is there a fee to apply?
A: No, there is no fee to apply.

Q: I would like to have one or two people write a recommendation about my potential for a career in a science-related field (since you ask for at least one recommendation that satisfies this requirement). Is there a separate recommendation form for recommendations that do not discuss this? Or should I use the same form for all recommendations?

A:
You can use the same form for all recommendations.

Q: How many people apply to this scholarship annually?

A: This is the first year for the Proton Energy Scholarship. We'll know by February 10, 2010!

Q: Do the following majors count as "science" or "technology?"

A: (see list below)
  • Engineering: Yes!
  • Physics: Yes!
  • Computer Science: Yes!
  • Earth and life science majors: Yes!
  • Mathematics: Science and technology is applied mathematics, but pure mathematics isn't science and technology. Close, but it doesn't qualify.
  • Nursing and health science majors: Yes!
  • Psychology: Yes!
  • Other science and technology majors: Yes!

Q: What do you mean by "need-based"?

A: For the Proton Energy Scholarship, financial need will be considered, but is not required for scholarship awards. The application asks for income information for you and your parents/guardians, however, this is only one of the criteria used to evaluate applicants. Significant emphasis is put on the other selection criteria listed in the Rules and Guidelines.

Q: I just completed the Proton Energy Scholarship application, and wanted to make sure I have correctly submitted all required information. Is there a quick checklist that I can review?

A: Thank you for applying for the Proton Energy Scholarship. Below is a checklist that includes all six required sections of the application process, and please continue to visit www.ProtonEnergyScholarship.org for the latest news and updates:

Q: Can a citizen of a country other than the United States apply for this scholarship? (I have a great passion for engineering!)

A: Technically, it's possible, but you'd have to fulfill at least these three requirements:
  1. Applicants must be a senior currently enrolled in a U.S. high school
  2. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident of the United States
  3. Applicants must declare a science or technology-related major, or intend to pursue major in this field
